The Digital Storytelling Experiment

My students just finished a unit on the Moon.  We took a field trip to the Challenger Learning Center in our community and we were astronauts and mission specialists.  We had a ball.  At the debriefing at the end of our experience, we saw a video created by the interns at the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston.  We danced and laughed and thought it was the coolest thing ever.  It told a story.  Here it is:

This past Friday, because it had been the “worst week ever” (from my point of view) I ended each class with the NASA video.  We danced and laughed and talked about our trip.  In two classes, something interesting happened.  Kids came up to me at the end of the class and asked if WE could do our own version of the Gangnam Style video like the one we saw.  I stopped and thought about it a moment.  This was digital storytelling! YES, you may do it!

So, the interested parties were tasked with writing lyrics about the Planet Community, who we are, what we do, why we do it, where we’re going and how we plan to get there.  Then we will take pictures and video from the trip and class activities to show who we are.  And we’ll attempt to put it to music.  We’re going to tell a story.
